In the beginning …
… a keyring was string or twine used to keep together handy things so they would not get lost. Then came the ring, hoops that provided an easier way of keeping a those objects in place. And then came keys. Fate had made the key find the ring and together they made sense. a Keyring! After this bond cam those ornaments that made keyrings a fashion statement. Fobs, chains, bottle openers and the future was set.
In reality, no one can really be sure when keyrings came into being. Some say ancient Egyptians invented the lock and key but we associate the keyring with jailers and dungeon masters. In the history of Europe, the Middle Ages or medieval period lasted from the 5th to the 15th century. Therefore the keyring has a dark and sinister use.
From its humble beginnings as metal rings or hoops, keyrings have definitely not allowed themselves to be left behind by technology. From being forged in the kilns of the days of King Arthur to containing a USB drive, keyrings have certainly undertaken a journey through our history. And the will keep doing so as we use them to keep our keys together, our beer bottle open, our computer files stored and our businesses advertised.
Who knows what the future may hold for the keyring, but for now, at least, they have proven that they too can evolve alongside us and technology’s changes; and today’s modern keyring is just the beginning.
